Fishing Village Chaos

Fishing Village Chaos - Slow Shutter

A couple of weeks back (June 2018), I co-taught a workshop with Etienne Bossot of Pics of Asia in central Vietnam (join us next year on the tour for some great photo opportunities, the chance to travel with 10 other photographers, and of course, a Larue or two!). One of our stops was a small fishing village on the central coast. Imagine medium-scale fishing boats bringing their cargo close to shore, small boats rowing out to collect the catch one by one, sellers all-but-attacking the boats as they return to shore, and an auction going on a couple of metres away from the water’s edge. Complete chaos. That’s what I saw. That’s what I decide to focus on.

Over the course of two early morning shoots, I began to piece together what I feel represents this place quite well. The chaos of the auction, the never-ending swells crashing to shore, and the brief moments of peace in between slowly formed themselves into a short story for me to present to you here. If you’d like to learn a little more about the process of creating some of these images, you can visit my YouTube video here.
